When strangers game

I’ve had a lot of spare time lately, so I’ve been hopping all over the city and trying out various board gaming groups/venues.  The variety is astounding.  When I walk into a new place, I just never know quite how friendly, skillful, or “normal” they will be.  In most cases, the thing that brings me joy is playing a solid game and winning, though to be fair, the Yanks have been crushing that joy much more than the Brits did.  I used to think I was pretty hot, but the stats are starting to disprove that theory.

On Sunday afternoon, I found a new group that was meeting at some stranger’s house.  Who are these people that invite strangers to their house, I hear you ask?  I guess, for the love of gaming, there are people that are willing to take the risk, which is exactly what I did as I jumped on the subway and headed over.  Well, I uncovered a gold mine.  The host was a super-hospitable guy with a roomy apartment, a chilled-out vibe and a group that was quite happy to welcome a strange Aussie into their circle.  Indeed, everyone there was a stranger to the group once.

There was a variety of simultaneous games going on and, sadly, my stats didn’t improve much.  We ate some of the fattest pizza I’ve ever seen and bounced from game to game in constantly changing groups.  The competition was fierce, but people started to drop off to do normal things like go home for sleep.  The mayhem started close to midnight when only 6 of us remained and ‘Cards Against Humanity’ was suggested.  It’s a racially/politically-incorrect party game that should only be played with immature people.  Fortunately, we all qualified.  2 raucous hrs later, we’d all abused each other substantially and crossed numerous offensive boundaries.  I felt like I’d split my sides with a group of old friends.  Thanks Lance.
