My sister is in NYC right now and we somehow stumbled onto Sofar Sounds. It’s an event where they list intimate band nights at secret locations around the city. There’s a strict head-count to keep things small, and you mostly can only get in by online lottery. Best of all, it’s BYO so everyone brings wine and beers and such.
The secret venue was the office of a creative web design studio, so we were sitting on peoples’ work chairs and resting our wine glasses beside their computer monitors. It was so relaxing and interesting. We loved 2 of the 3 acts, especially Bailen, who are 3 siblings that play lovely, folky harmonies.
I’m definitely going to look for more of these gigs when I have free nights in the city. The only problem is that it’s bound to get more and more popular and then winning tickets will be as likely as Shakespeare in the Park. Sheesh.
